Miles and miles of virgin forest flank mighty Mt. Lassen shown here from Hat Creek to the north. The Hat Creek flows formed a wide volcanic valley now covered in California Red Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Sugar Pine, White Fir. I’m seated on a lava outcrop we climbed up to near Hat Creek campground on a gorgeous August evening. The wide expanse of country in the basin between Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta is stunning and very sparingly used.
Mount Lassen is a bubbling hot active volcano. Trails provide access to stunning active geological areas.
Seemingly solid surfaces may be paper thin crust over boiling pots of sulfur. Stay on the Boardwalk!
The calm looking, inviting turquoise pond is actually a scalding hot, sulpherous pool of danger flanked by a leisurely smoking steam vent. The scene can suddenly change, the pools surface becoming a mud gray boiling pot.
